Six UB students were selected as recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship — five more than last year.

The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman scholarship program supports students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to national security and economic prosperity.

The Gilman program, administered by the Institute of International Education, is a competitive, merit-based scholarship. To be eligible, applicants must receive a Federal Pell Grant.

The following students will be studying abroad during summer 2025:

  • Lai Ching Tseung, a rising junior majoring in business administration, will study in Singapore.
  • Catherine Diaz, a rising senior majoring in public health, will study in Costa Rica.
  • Azaria Fulton, a rising sophomore majoring in psychology, will study in South Korea.
  • Jlouis Gutierrez, a rising junior majoring in mechanical engineering, will study in Germany.
  • Li Yi Hu, a rising senior majoring in biochemistry, will study in Italy.

Jeronimo Silva Lugo, a rising senior majoring in French and global affairs, will study in Taiwan for the 2025-26 academic year. Silva Lugo has also received a Boren Scholarship, a prestigious international award that sponsors U.S. undergraduates to study abroad in areas of the world critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad programs. Following his time in Taiwan, he plans to pursue a master’s degree in international relations, focusing on American and Chinese relations.

“The Boren and Gilman scholarships open doors to transformative international experiences, helping our students gain critical language skills, cross-cultural understanding and a broader perspective on global issues,” says Megan Stewart, director of fellowships and scholarships. “We are incredibly proud of our awardees.”
