Colleagues,
Changes in the federal research funding landscape have created uncertainty within our university research community. These changes include sudden and unplanned grant terminations, possible reductions in indirect cost recovery (ICR) and expected reductions in long-term grant support. In addition, there are clear signals that the current administration is shifting research priority areas. Finally, staff reductions and possible closures at federal agencies may significantly harm our researchers’ ability to navigate these agencies and their priorities.
To support our research momentum in these times of uncertainty, the university has established two new programs: UB COMPLETE and UB LAUNCH. These funding initiatives will offer grants to help faculty mitigate the impacts of recent terminations, agency closures, eliminated programs and changing priorities. They are summarized below:
UB COMPLETE: Grants of up to $25,000 are available from the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPRED) to address immediate grant needs following a cancellation. These needs might include activities such as completing data collection, analysis and student support. Faculty who have had a grant terminated since January 2025 are eligible to apply for UB COMPLETE. Please note that funds received through this program must be matched one-to-one by a combination of funds provided by the PI(s), the PI’s department(s) and the cognizant dean(s).
UB LAUNCH: Grants of up to $25,000 are available from the VPRED to assist faculty to transition to research areas which are now prioritized by federal funding agencies. These funds might be used to collect preliminary data, test initial hypotheses, etc. and must result in a new external grant proposal within 12 months of the UB LAUNCH award. Please note that funds received through this program are to be matched one-to-one by a combination of funds provided by the PI(s), the PI’s department(s) and the cognizant dean(s).
Details and submission requirements for both programs may be found at .
The application period is June - August 2025 and proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
Do not hesitate to contact Carol O’Connell in the VPRED’s office ovpr.limitedsubmission@research.buffalo.edu with questions.
Please share this message with your faculty.
Thank you for your continued support as we navigate these unprecedented circumstances.
Sincerely,
Venu Govindaraju
