“The lives of countless individuals across the state, nation and world have been significantly improved because of the dedicated work of UB’s faculty researchers, students and alumni. ”

A new website was launched to raise awareness about the significant, ongoing impact of UB’s research and its benefits to society and the world.

“The goal is to spotlight the far-reaching, lifesaving research performed at UB currently and over many decades, much of which has been supported by federal funding,” says John Della Contrada, vice president for university communications. “The lives of countless individuals across the state, nation and world have been significantly improved because of the dedicated work of UB’s faculty researchers, students and alumni.”

As one of the country’s top public research universities, UB has been changing the world through transformative research for decades — from inventing the implantable pacemaker to revolutionizing the field of oral biology to developing handwriting recognition for the postal service, which laid the groundwork for many of today’s AI breakthroughs. The new website will serve as a hub to share that ongoing impact with state and federal lawmakers, regional community members, higher education peers and UB faculty, staff and students.

The website highlights timely facts about UB’s research activity, noting its:

  • $540 million annual spending on research.
  • 135 interdisciplinary research centers and institutes.
  • 294 clinical trials in 2024.
  • 4,403 participants enrolled in clinical trials in 2024.
  • $3 billion-plus annual economic impact.
  • 1,701 jobs created in the past three fiscal years.
  • 410 startups supported since 2006.
  • 50-plus technologies available for licensing.

It also emphasizes important, relevant research areas at UB that impact the greater public — including driving medical breakthroughs, realizing AI for good, engineering clean energy, advancing healthy brains, protecting our planet, living well longer, safeguarding space exploration and building climate resilience.

The website, which can be found on UB’s home page, will serve as a resource for academic and administrative units to share on their webpages, in social media and in newsletters reaching key internal and external audiences.

In creating this resource, UB joins other (AAU) institutions that have created similar websites designed to communicate the societal value of university research taking place on American campuses. Together, the universities are aiming to reach the public with the message that university research isn’t done for the university — it’s done for the entire nation because it seeks to solve real-world problems that humans care about.
