According to multiple news outlets, a cable dated May 27 and signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio has instructed U.S. Embassies and Consulates to temporarily stop scheduling new visa interviews for F, M, and J visa applicants. As of now, the U.S. Department of State has not officially confirmed this. We are closely monitoring the situation and will share updates as they become available.
- If you already have a visa interview scheduled, it should still happen. If it is canceled, you should receive a notification from the embassy.
- Check your email regularly, especially the one used on your DS-160.
- Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate directly with any questions.
- If you still need to schedule a visa interview:
- Complete and submit your DS-160 as soon as possible.
- Try to schedule a visa interview. If no appointments are available, check the embassy’s website and social media regularly for updates.
- If you are a current student abroad and do not yet have a visa interview scheduled, there may be a delay in your return to the U.S. Please communicate with your academic department.
- We don’t yet know how this pause may affect students who are eligible for a visa interview waiver. If you’ve received drop-off instructions, follow them as provided.
- Even before this news, all visa applicants were required to share social media information on the DS-160 form. We recommend you:
- Be thoughtful about your social media presence and digital footprint.
- If you are concerned, consider speaking with an immigration attorney before applying for a visa or traveling.
ISS will continue to monitor the situation and send you updated information. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact an ISS advisor. Please reach out to an
