Since thimerosal (a type of ethyl-mercury) is found in only a small number of flu vaccines, Russo said the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ decision will likely not have much of an impact on the vaccine landscape. It also doesn’t mean the preservative isn’t safe, he says. But he worries that the move could “undermine, in the American public, the view about the safety of vaccines.”
