An article in the San Jose Mercury News on research into the immense but little-known world of the microscopic organisms and the roles they play in the life of this planet quotes Steven Gill, associate professor of oral biology, who said, "Humans are super-organisms...an amalgamation of microbial and human attributes. We're entirely dependent on this microbial population for our well-being." The article was widely distributed throughout the country to newspapers that include the Miami Herald and Kansas City Star.
