BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Department of Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) in the School of Health Related Professions has been rated among the top 15 such departments in the nation in faculty-research productivity by the journal Clinical Laboratory Science.
The study, conducted at The Ohio State ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ in collaboration with the ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Tennessee at Memphis and the ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Minnesota, involved 127 college and university CLS programs. The UB department was the only one in New York State and one of only three departments in the Northeast ranked among the top 15 by the journal.
Faculty research productivity was defined as time spent in research, numbers of publications and presentations, and grant activity, including grants submitted but not funded.
In addition to UB, the top 15 programs, listed in the journal in alphabetical order, are at Georgia State ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½, Medical College of Georgia, Michigan State ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½, The Ohio State ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Kentucky, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Minnesota and ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of North Carolina.
Also, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Southern Mississippi, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Texas at Galveston, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Texas at San Antonio, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Vermont, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Wisconsin at Madison and ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.
The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences provides instruction leading to a bachelor's and master's degree in medical technology, a field of applied biology and chemistry appropriate for students primarily interested in the delivery of health services.
The department, chaired by Paul Kostyniak, Ph.D., also offers a special major in biotechnology.
