Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

This award requires university nomination or interview and cannot be applied to directly. Students must work with the Office of Fellowships and Scholarships and meet university deadlines.

Overview

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to sophomores and juniors who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue advanced degrees in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Students who plan to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career in private practice (MD).

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident with intent to become a citizen. 
  • Be a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) major.
  • Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Be a sophomore or a junior.
  • Have plans to pursue a PhD in STEM.
  • Have research experience.

How to Apply

  • September: Application opens. Submit the for approval. 
  • Nov. 15: Full online application must be completed. Three letters of recommendation and transcripts due to Lisa Gagnon in the Office of Fellowships and Scholarships.

Selection Process

Students who complete all application materials will be considered for nomination to the Goldwater Foundation. A faculty committee will select the four ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ nominees.

  • Dec. 1: Candidates notified if selected for one of UB’s four nomination slots.
  • Late January: ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ submits nominations.
  • Late March: Recipients announced.
