Opening Reception for Martha Jackson in Paris & Bits by Bits

A vibrant painting of an orange tabby cat with closed eyes is shown on the left side of the image. The cat is surrounded by floating blue fish, green vines, a red flower, and a gray mouse, all set against a pink background. To the right, a black-and-white cutout of Martha Jackson, smiling and wearing a patterned blouse, is digitally placed against a beige background, appearing as if she is posing next to the painting.

Description

Celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions at UB Art Galleries that explore artistic experimentation, community, and transnational exchange.

On the first floor, Martha Jackson in Paris reexamines postwar modernism through the lens of Buffalo-born gallerist Martha Jackson, who forged powerful connections between American and European artists in midcentury Paris. Featuring work by Joan Mitchell, Paul Jenkins, Sam Francis, Claire Falkenstein, and others, this exhibition highlights Jackson’s role in shaping a global network of artistic influence.

Upstairs, Bits by Bits: Six Artists from Buffalo’s Progressive Studio presents ambitious new work by Angelina Blackmer, Andy Calderon, Kelly Evans, Shamika Long, Larell Potter, and Mathew Sharp—artists from Starlight Studio and Art Gallery, a progressive art studio supporting adults with disabilities. Rather than organizing around a shared theme, the exhibition centers the unique vision of each artist—offering bold, emotional, and deeply personal perspectives shaped through months of self-directed practice.

Enjoy light refreshments and a chance to meet some of the artists and collaborators behind each show. Whether you’re returning to campus or visiting for the first time, we invite you to start the season with art that challenges, connects, and inspires.
